Common Questions & Concerns

As many are not familiar with mentoring there are typically many questions or concerns.   We've attempted to address those that we've found to be common in the following sections.   If you still have questions please do not hesitate to either contact us by setting up a consultation session or go to our Contact page to drop us a message and we'll be sure to get back to you.

How does mentoring differ from a 12 Step program?

Both 12 Step and Mentoring programs have proven to be effective - with some data indicating that mentoring providing greater long-term recovery.    The following differentiators are from my personal experiences with both programs and why I am strongly committed to mentoring.

Program Centered vs Christ Centered

While 12 Steps address one's 'Higher Power' they focus as their core The Program.   Redemption Road's mentoring program is built upon a personal relationship with Christ as it's core.    The focus is on building and strengthening your ongoing relationship with Christ as the key to a redemptive life instead of ongoing program meetings.

Identity

The primary identity maintained in a 12 Step Program is that of an addict while mentoring primary identity is that of a Child of God!

Addiction Transference

There is a tendency for those in 12 Step recovery to transfer their addiction from their acting out to 12 Step meetings and calls.

Cost

There is no cost to either join a 12 Step meeting or getting a sponsor whereas there is a nominal monthly mentoring fee.   Your mentor has committed to this program as a calling and ministry - trained and certified through the Bravehearts network.   The fee is consequential to an individuals commitment to beginning the Journey to a Redemptive Life.

What is Bravehearts and what does it mean to be a Certified Mentor?

Bravehearts is an organization founded by Michael Leahy to support those who are struggling with sexual addiction.   Bravehearts includes training, support and certification programs to arm those who have traveled the journey from the effects of this addiction (both the strugglers and spouses) to further there outreach by mentoring those in need.   The following is an interview with Michael on the Covenant Eyes podcast where he goes into detail about the issues of sexual addiction and mentoring.

Is Mentoring a replacement for Professional Counseling?

The short answer is absolutely not!   There are many situations where working with a professional counselor or therapist is the best approach to addressing specific issues that mentors are not trained for.   As such we are building relationships with therapists who utilize a faith based approach in their work.

How long does a mentoring program require?

One size never fits all and the same is true that there is no one answer to how long a mentoring program requires for each individual.   While Redemption Road offers Month to Month and 6 Month options the full program is planned for 12 months in length but is customized to the needs and requirements of each individual.

Will I remain anonymous in my community and church?

We maintain strict confidentiality.   No personal information is every release without your request and approval.

How does 1-on-1 Mentoring work?

The core of our mentoring program consists of what we reference as daily disciplines.   These will include devotionals, readings and studies along with structured coursework.   Each individual is provided a private account to Redemption Road's online mentoring system which provides the mentee and mentor with a 1-on-1 and confidential interface for assigning and completing the coursework, messaging and scheduling the weekly hourly reviews.

Why is there a charge for this?

The key to a successful recover is the individual's commitment.    If the motivation to get into a mentoring program is not your decision (as opposed to a demand from a spouse or family member) the chances of success are not nearly as good.  Statistics have indicated that a mentee who is required to 'invest skin in the game.'   We have made a considerable investment in building a mentoring program that is designed to not only address your sexual addictions but also improve relationships to God,  your spouse and others around you.   In short we believe there is significant value in this program.   There are always situation in our current economic environment where the monthly mentoring fees cannot be worked into a budget - be sure to go to the next section below!

What if I can't afford the monthly rate?

We see Redemption Road as our ministry and as such we don't want to leave behind any individual who is truly committed to change and recovery to a lack of funds.    We are working with church and donor groups who can assist us in covering or reducing the monthly mentoring fees.   If you are committed but can't build the mentoring fee into your budget be sure to check out if you qualify for a mentoring scholarship.
